We had no trouble getting the ants from the company. It is so neat to see how ants make tunnel, how they connect to each other, and how the ants travel from one spot to another. I bought this for my son's 7 year old birthday. My husband and I were just as fasinated as my son.
I'm going to have to try the suggestion made by another user and put the farm in the fridge to calm them down before adding more ants.I don't think that this toy would survive it I were to drop it, but other than that I'm ok keeping it in the house since it's sturdy enough for the ants to not escape. I thought ants were supposed to have a better work ethic.Regardless of the performance plan that the ants need to be on, it's amazing to watch them work. The ants created a few tunnels, however they mostly stay on top and wait to escape. After about three weeks, only two out of the six ants were left. This is a very neat toy. I gathered my own large ants from the backyard, but could only get six in since they were so active and I couldn't fit them in under the top without squashing a few. We have enjoyed this educational toy and use it as a night light.

I was surprised to find that this toy actually kept my brother and I entertained. With this product all you do is poke holes about one inch deep with the provided stick and fill up with ants and watch those suckers dig. This was definitely a great purchase and I recommend it to everyone of all ages. I purchased the ant farm during the holidays for my younger brother and I to learn more about ants. Getting started was much easier than the traditional ant farms where you have fill it with the sand and whatnot. We were excited everyday to check up on the ants and see what progress they had made.
(sory for my english). Maybe they got old, maybe too hot(cold), but now they are sitting on the top of tunnels and doing nothing. It is fascinating to be able to see what ants do underground, see how they cut gel with their small but powerfull mandibles, how they carry just cut particles of gel out, on a surface, how they build tunnels under and above the surface and most amazing how they, without any instruments, are able perfectly connect tunnels in depth. we will see what's going to happen next but I would like to refill Aquarium with new gel and ants. Ants arrived little bit later, but as soon as we were holding a small tube with living little creatures - at the same time they were in their new habitat.
Definatly worth buying. Only one thing - after about two months they stoped digging. As everybody says it took'em about 2 days for adaptation period and then. When aquarium arrived - everybody were very excited. those sons of the sheep started to dig.
